Pascal Frossard is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Institute of EPFL, where he heads the Signal Processing Laboratory (LTS4). Since 2018, he serves as Associate Dean for Research in the EPFL School of Engineering. His research interests include image and video processing and coding, visual information analysis, multi-view imaging, interactive image communication systems, error control algorithms and information theory, as well as graph-based signal processing.
He got his M.Sc. and Ph.D., both in Electrical Engineering, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1997 and 2000 respectively. In 1998, he graduated from the Doctoral School of the Communications Systems Division of EPFL. Then he started his PhD with the Signal Processing Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where he was involved in a joint partnership between Hewlett-Packard and EPFL. The topic of his PhD research was on error-resilient and multi-resolution video communications. Between 2001 and 2003, he has been with the Media Delivery Architectures Department of the IBM TJ Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY, USA), where he mainly worked on media compression, streaming technologies and delivery architectures (iSee, SENDS and ARMS projects). In 2003, he joined the Signal Processing Institute of EPFL as head of the LTS4 laboratory, under a professorship grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS). In 2006, he has been appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Institute of EPFL. In 2013 he has been appointed as Associate Professor in the same institute.
Among other technical activities, Pascal Frossard has been the Technical Program Chair of IEEE ICIP 2014 (Paris, October 2014). He has been the General Chair of IEEE DSW 2018 (Lausanne, Switzerland), IEEE ICME 2002 (Lausanne, Switzerland, August 2002). He organized the Graph Signal Processing Workshop in 2018, the Packet Video workshop in 2007, and served as Technical Program Chair of EUSIPCO 2008. He has further served in numerous organization or technical program committees, such as IEEE ICIP, IEEE ICASSP or IEEE ICME. He has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (2010-2013), of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2004-2012), and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2006-2011). He has been an Associate Editor of the Computer Networks Journal (Elsevier) (2007-2008) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Advances in Multimedia (2006-2009). He also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the EURASIP Journal of Signal Processing (2003-2005).
He has been the chair of the IEEE Image Video and Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) Technical Committee (2014-2015), and he was an elected member of this committee since 2007. He is also an elected member of the IEEE Visual Signal Processing and Communications (VSPC) Technical Committee (2006-), of the IEEE Multimedia Systems and Applications (MSA) Technical Committee (2005-), and of the IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP) Technical Committee (2004-2007, 2015-) . He has served as Steering Committee Chair of the IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee (MultiComm) (2012-2014) and he has been serving as Vice-Chair of this committee (and chair of the Media Streaming Interest Group) between 2004 and 2006. He has chaired between 2005 and 2007 the steering committee of the IEEE ICME conference, the IEEE multimedia conference, co-sponsored by the Circuits and Systems, Communications, Computer and Signal Processing Societies. He is an IEEE Fellow.
In 2005, he received the prestigious IBM Faculty Award, that recognizes the quality of his research, and its importance to IBM Research strategy. He received in 2008 the Exploratory Stream Analytics Innovation Award from IBM Research. In 2017, he received the prestigious Google Faculty Award. He was the co-author of the Best Student Paper Award of IEEE AVSS 2007, the Best Paper Award at Mobimedia 2008, the Best Student Paper Award at ICPR 2008, the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia Best Paper Award 2011, the Best Student Paper at Packet Video 2012, the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation Best Paper Award Runner-Up 2014, the Best Paper Award Runner-Up, Information and Inference: A journal of the IMA, 2012-2014, the Best Student Paper Award at ICASSP 2015, the Best Paper Award at ACM MMSys 2016, the Best Paper Award at PCS 2016, the Best Paper Award at IEEE ISM 2016, and the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award 2016 , the Best Student Paper Award at EUSIPCO 2018 and the Best Paper Award at ACM MMSys 2018. His former PhD student Effrosyni Kokiopoulou received both the 2010 EPFL Doctoral Thesis Award and the 2010 ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Multimedia Computing, Communications and Application. His PhD student Alhussein Fawzi received the prestigious IBM PhD Fellowship Award in 2013 and 2015.
